Mar Falguera: “Direct contact with professionals from the sector is key to learning at HTSI”


mar-falgueraWe interviewed Mar Falguera, Day Auditor at The Bvlgari Resort & Residences Dubai, and alumnus of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi (URL). Falguera, who obtained her bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management (2017), started her career at the international hotel chain as Residences Concierge Coordinator, and has been working in Finances for 5 months.


What would you emphasize about the education you received at HTSI?
The direct contact with professionals from the sector, either because they visit the school or because students travel to their hotel or tourism business to get to know them. I’d also emphasize the quality of the professors: many currently work in the sector, and that makes it easier for them to have first-hand knowledge of the industry. Plus, I got a lot out of the professional trips we took to London, Belgium and France.
Why did you decide to study tourism?
I like to travel. I always knew I wanted to be “at the front desk”. I wanted to treat customers the way I wanted to be treated, and I wanted to learn how to do it. Plus, I’ve always liked languages and learning about other cultures, so the bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management at HTSI was perfect for me.

The experience of Anna Contreras, an alumnus of the HTSI Master’s Program in Hotel Business Management


Anna Contreras, chief operations officer at Aspasios Apartments, shared her experience as an alumnus of the Executive Master’s Program in Hotel Business Management at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi – HTSI: “I was doubting between a few different options, but what won me over –besides the School’s reputation, being a part of Ramon Llull University and the good relationship with ESADE– was the great professors”, Contreras explained.

HTSI’s master’s program in hotel management provides the management skills and abilities needed to deal with current challenges in the tourism and hotel industry. It puts students in direct contact with people in the sector through meetings with tourism and hospitality professionals, like the Hospitality Managers Forum organized by the School.

In addition, the master’s program has a clear practical orientation, since it reinforces formal knowledge and provides students with the methods and tools that ensure they can take on personal and professional challenges: “working on my final project throughout the year was really useful. It let me apply everything I learned in a realistic setting”, Contreras concluded.

How did you get the opportunity to work at Mandarin Oriental Barcelona?

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi helped me get an internship at Hotel Mandarin the third year of my bachelor’s studies. I was sure I wanted to work in human resources, and at my meeting with HTSI’s Professional Advisors department—which guides you through the whole process—I told them what department I was interested in and that I wanted to train with an Asian company.

The School helped me get an interview with the Director of Human Resources of Mandarin Oriental Barcelona, and I interned there for 7 months.

Xavier Martín: “the focus on business in HTSI’s bachelor degree in tourism is what helped me to launch Turijobs”.


The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi (URL) interviewed Xavier Martín Canals, cofounder and general director of the Turijobs job portal. Martín is an HTSI alumnus and a member of the HTSI Advisory Board, which is made up of management from important businesses in the international tourism and hospitality sector. This interview is the first of a series of chats with each of the members of the Advisory Board.

  • The company you direct, Turijobs, started out as your final project at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. What did you learn at HTSI that you were able to incorporate into your project?

Of everything I learned, I’d emphasize the methods needed to turn a project into a reality. I always say that rather than just being taught theory, I was encouraged from the start to think about a practical project that could be applied in real life. This focus on business is what I remember the most and what I liked the most about the School.
