With the goal of continuing to innovate in the learning methods used in HTSI’s Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, this year the course on innovation and entrepreneurship incorporated use of the Lego® Serious Play® method. This initiative seeks to promote teamwork, alongside other innovative methods used throughout the semester.
“We use Lego pieces because by using our hands to build things we activate our minds; this helps us to be more creative and helps our brains to function. It even helps us to develop skills we didn’t even know we had”, explains Inge Larsen, the official facilitator of the Lego® Serious Play® method among students of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi.
In groups of five, students complete out the different activities proposed by Larsen. These range from the simple task of building a tower to the complex task of using only six pieces to build the representation of the spirit of the team, including the personalization of who they are as students.
According to course professor Hubert Joo, the important part is that “even though we don’t know what to build, we build. Trust in your own hands, it works. There’s more than one way to build.” As a result of the session all students build, and each one tries to understand and listen to what each member of their team has done.
