On October 25, a new edition of the Professional Talent Forum was held at Hotel Arts by the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi – HTSI (Ramon Llull University).
Students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, the Master’s Degree in Hotel Business Management, the Master’s Degree in Business Tourism and Events Management and the University Master’s Degree in Hotel Management attended this annual event to interact in person with the heads of Human Resources and other important departments from the most prestigious companies in the field of hospitality and recreation.
“The Professional Talent Forum is a unique opportunity for students. They get to personally manage their internships, both mandatory and optional” stated Elisabet Sulé, director of Corporate Relations at HTSI.
The most sought-after professional skills in the field of tourism, hospitality and recreation
To start the event, a round table was held on the latest trends and challenges in the field of tourism, hospitality and recreation. It included Georgina Jené, from the Human Resources Department of Atlanta Viajes; Andreu Canals, director of Cotton House Hotel; Ildefonso Moyano, managing director for Spain & Portugal at Mews; Jordi Sala, director of Human Resources at Hotel Arts and Pedro Real, key account manager at HRS. They spoke about retaining youth talent, coming changes in the sector, and some of the most important recommendations for adding value to professional careers.
Empathy, motivation, proactivity, flexibility, commitment and responsibility are some of the industry’s most sought-after skills.
“We mostly look for people who are proactive and in touch with the latest technologies. But, above all, you have to know how to find a balance between hard work and enjoying what you do”, Jené noted.
Andreu Canals argued that companies should guide students during their internships, and encouraged students to “show your passion and always be willing to smile.”
Ildefonso Moyano noted that the industry is changing at an extremely fast pace, and that, as a result, “we need flexible professionals who use innovation to change the tourism industry.”
Jordi Sala, meanwhile, noted that students can learn how to promote their talent through their internships, which “also give you in-depth knowledge of the reality of the sector.”
Finally, Pedro Real emphasized that “entrepreneurial skills are key to your professional future. It’s also important not to lose customer centricity.”
Companies from the tourism, hospitality and recreation sector recruit talent at the Professional Talent Forum
In addition to the up-to-date content provided, direct contact with the sector and opportunities for networking were two aspects emphasized by the students of tourism in attendance.
“The Professional Talent Forum is a great experience for us. It helps us find out about internships available in our sector, and we get advice from professionals on how the world of employment is changing”, noted Josep Ferrer, a 3rd-year student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
For Andrea Neus Horacasitas, also a 3rd-year student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism, this event is essential to students: “it puts you in contact with the world of employment from the very beginning of your studies.”
Brais Rodríguez, a student of the Master’s Degree in Hotel Management, noted that “this is an opportunity HTSI gives us to connect with the sector and share our experience with other students and professionals, so we can start to stand out.”
For HTSI, processes that help companies find talent are an essential part of university studies.
