The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi (HTSI), part of Ramon Llull University, managed to raise a total of €644 during the Sant Jordi fund drive. Besides the Recicla Cultura (Recycle Culture) sale of second-hand books organized by Servei Solidari, the School also worked with the Arrels Foundation to sell hand-made roses.
In total, 161 books and 83 roses were sold and 838 books were collected thanks to the participation of HTSI students, professors and staff.
Each year, Servei Solidari organizes the Recicla Cultura fund drive to help young people and adults access literacy and language training courses in Catalan and Spanish.
159 participating entities collected €140,069 in the Servei Solidari initiative “El teu llibre pot formar part d’una història” (Your book can be part of a story). For every €42 raised, a scholarship is given to a functionally illiterate person or an immigrant.
Furthermore, the Arrels Foundation prepared over 10,000 handmade felt roses using designs by Miquel Fuster and Joan Turú to help homeless or formerly homeless individuals to feel realized and remake their social networks.
The SANT JORDI fund drive, an opportunity to promote the values of hospitality
HTSI’s charity initiatives and Social Commission include a range of activities such as a bottle cap drive to help children with serious health problems, a blood drive for the Government of Catalonia’s Blood and Tissue Bank, or a bake sale for the Marató de TV3 fund drive.
With these social inclusion initiatives, the School promotes values such as solidarity, hospitality, sustainability and social responsibility in the university community in order to train tourism and hospitality professionals that are conscious, compassionate, competent and committed.
