Over 80 1st-year students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism attended the inauguration of the 2019-2020 academic year at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi (URL).
These new students –hailing from 20 different countries– will take part in a number of orientation activities during their first week. These are meant to encourage teambuilding and to help students learn how HTSI operates.
HTSI dean Ricard Santomà offered students a welcome speech that emphasized the challenge of environmental sustainability in an industry involving over 1,400 million international trips and over 4,000 million domestic trips each year. Along these lines, Santomà insisted that the issues faced by the tourism and hospitality sector can only be effectively dealt with by well-trained individuals. He encouraged students to prepare themselves for the challenge of positive change in the tourism and hospitality sector.
HTSI counsellor José Luis Iriberri SJ also spoke briefly to inform students about the Society of Jesus’s educational interest in building a better, fairer world: “not only do we need to enjoy tourism, we need to make sure it respects the planet, other nations and other cultures.”
