What skills are needed by professionals in the tourism and hospitality industry?

“Personal and professional skills in tourism and hospitality management” is the title of the lecture offered by the General Manager of Hotel Blancafort Thermal Spa, Esther Comín, to the second-year Bachelor students of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Comín began her presentation congratulating the students because “in my opinion, you’ve chosen the right path. The hotel industry can be a nightmare, but it’s also very gratifying. A hotel is one of the funnest places you can work”.

After working as a manager for over 10 years, Comín assured her audience that the hardest part of her job is making decisions “because the pressure gets very tough”. She has managed teams ranging from 20 to 260 individuals. “I can tell you that at the moment, there are more than 50 professionals that have worked in teams I have managed who occupy high-level management positions in the city of Barcelona.”

The speaker encouraged students to know themselves: “you are the generation with the most knowledge about this sector; you are the ones that are best trained, but you have to know who you are.”

Comín, who has worked as Night Manager at Hotel Arts 5* GL and General Manager at the Gran Hotel Princesa Sofía 5*, among others, revealed what management is looking for in the people they hire, and what skills are needed to work in the industry “without ever forgetting that what we are really looking for is a sincere smile.”
